Reflecting on 2014

I am happy to be linking up with Susan from Passion in Portable Land in reflecting on 2014.

Questions to ponder as you reflect on 2014...

1.  What was good/bad?
2.  What do you want to do differently?
3.  What do you want to change this year?

The Good

Where to begin... frankly, having my family healthy and happy is all the good I need. To be able to spend the holidays with my family, or to just be able to pick up a phone and say hi is my "good."  My father has been "living with" cancer for about 3 years, and he is putting up such a valiant fight (he is a Marine, so fight is in his blood). Before his fight, I'm not sure my reflection on the "good" would have been the same, but those who have been through this fight know what "good" is...it's having your family and enjoying the simple things in life.

The Bad

I try keep the "bad" in perspective. Is what I think is "bad" at the time, really bad. No, not compared to what is truly bad in the world. Thankfully, I have no "bad" to reflect on.

Do Different in 2015

There's a saying that I heard recently, "Be the change you want to see in the world." The change I want to see, in my world, is how we support our English Language Learners. Currently, my role is to see reading groups, and I see each group for 15 minutes. That's right...15 minutes! And that doesn't include transition time. That's the way it is...but why is it that way?  It's not the best way. So my hope is to rethink the way students are serviced, and hopefully be the change my school needs to give our students the best support.

Change in 2015

Well, the first thing I plan to change is how I eat! I plan to eat healthier in 2015!  My pants no longer fit, and I refuse to go up another pant size!  I am starting a weight loss program next week (my first weight loss program ever) and I'm actually looking forward to it!  It's the 24 Day Challenge.  It's only 24 days!!... at least that's what I keep telling myself;) Stay tuned to see the results:) I also want to get more exercise. I have a gym membership that I pay for every month, but I never use...UGH!  That kills me, but yet not enough to make me go. So I plan to change "not going" to the gym to "going," dare I say...every week!

I'm also thinking of making the leap to middle school next year. I've been at the elementary level for 10 years. I think growing up as a military brat and moving every 2 years, "change" is imprinted in me:) I need a new challenge, a new adventure. I LOVE the elementary level, but I really want to teach Language Arts to 6th or 7th graders. Digging deeper into those reading and writing skills will be a fun change for me.

Thank you, Susan, for inviting me to my first Linky Party! It was fun!!

I'd love to see others join in on the fun, so head on over to Passion in Portable Land to link up:)

  1. Kristen, thank you so much for linking up! I lost my father in 2012 to a very aggressive brain cancer. He too fought a good fight and had a high quality of life until the last couple of months. I can totally relate to the "good" just being simply family. That's not just good, but a blessing! I will keep your father and family in my thoughts and prayers during 2015! My husband is a former Marine, and now my son is a new Marine! Putting up a good fight is in definitely in the blood of all Marines! As far as moving up to Middle School for a change sounds wonderful! I love teaching reading/ELA! My 4th grade team is talking about blocking next year and I would get to teach just ELA Standards/Social Studies. I'm very excited about that possibility!

Blessings to you this New Year!
